What are IMSOL’s school hours?

The core school day at IMSOL runs from 9:00 to 15:30, with an extended day option available until 17:00 for families that need it.

Is IMSOL licensed by the Latvian Ministry of Education?

IMSOL is fully accredited and complies with all educational standards set by the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science as an international school. We are committed to exceeding these national standards and providing a holistic education at every level.

What are the qualifications of IMSOL teachers?

Our teachers hold university degrees and diplomas from the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) or MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education), ensuring they’re qualified to implement the authentic Montessori method. They are also all fully trained to teach the Primary Years Programme (PYP) by the International Baccalaureate*. Additionally, our assistant teachers are also Montessori trained. Our staff regularly attends professional development courses and international conferences to stay at the forefront of educational innovation.

How will I know my child is receiving a rigorous education at IMSOL?

IMSOL is unapologetically academic. We ensure a rigorous education by adhering to internationally recognized standards and frameworks, including the integration of NGSS, C3 Framework Standards, and Common Core for Language and Math. Our curriculum is designed to challenge students, promote critical thinking, and foster a deep understanding of core academic concepts. We regularly assess student progress and provide transparent communication with parents about their child’s achievements and areas for growth.

I’ve heard students at Montessori get to do whatever they want. Is that true?

While Montessori education does emphasize choice and independence, it’s within a carefully prepared environment with clear boundaries and expectations. Students at IMSOL are free to choose activities that align with their learning goals, but this freedom comes with responsibility and guidance. Teachers ensure that students are engaged in constructive tasks and also provide structure and support to help children understand the balance between freedom and discipline.

What do the students do all day?

A typical day at IMSOL is a blend of structured learning activities and self-directed work. Students engage in hands-on, interactive lessons that cover a wide range of subjects, from math and language to cultural studies and science. They also participate in individual or small-group activities that encourage exploration and discovery. The weekly schedule includes time for outdoor play and arts, ensuring a well-rounded approach to each child’s development.

How does IMSOL support children with different learning styles?

At IMSOL, we recognize that each child is unique, with their own learning style and pace. Our Montessori-trained teachers are skilled at creating individualized learning plans that cater to the needs of each student. By observing and understanding each child’s approach to learning, our educators provide materials and activities that best suit their individual needs, ensuring a supportive and effective learning experience for all.

I’m worried my child won’t be pushed enough in a Montessori school to thrive. What kinds of kids succeed in Montessori schools?

Montessori education is designed to cater to a wide range of learning styles and is particularly well-suited for children who benefit from a hands-on and self-paced learning environment.

Children who do well in Montessori are typically those who:

  • are curious and enjoy exploring topics deeply and at their own pace.
  • thrive in a less structured environment where they can exercise a degree of autonomy over their learning choices.
  • benefit from individualized attention and learning plans that can be tailored to their specific strengths and areas for growth.
  • enjoy learning through discovery, inquiry, and practical engagement rather than through rote memorization.
  • are self-motivated and can work independently as well as collaboratively with peers.

We suggest that you come visit, see for yourself, and talk to some parents of our young Montessorians to give you a glimpse into what they have seen in their children.

How does IMSOL support children’s connection with nature?

Outdoor play is a daily event at IMSOL, where we integrate nature as an extension of our classroom. We arrange nature walks, mountain trips, and visits to farms, promoting an active lifestyle and appreciation for the environment. Seasonal camps are also organized to deepen this connection.

What sets IMSOL apart from other independent/private schools?

IMSOL is unique in Latvia (and in the Baltics) for blending a quality Montessori education with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP)* from ages 2.5 months to 12 years. As a school affiliated with AMI, we mentor future Montessori educators and are routinely evaluated by international experts to ensure we meet the highest global standards. Our commitment goes beyond academic excellence to include social, emotional, and physical development, fostering a holistic growth for each child in our care.

The International Montessori School of Latvia is a Candidate School* for the Primary Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that the International Montessori School of Latvia believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP).  Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.
